Transforming the centre of the community
Blakelaw & District Social Club, located on a large estate in Newcastle upon Tyne, has long served as the beating heart of its local community, a true social cornerstone. However, years of wear had left the building tired and in need of rejuvenation.
Determined to breathe new life into this vital community space, the fitter, a local and a regular at the club, took on the challenge of transforming its exterior himself. His goal was to create a fresh, modern look that would honour the club’s heritage while providing a much-needed visual uplift for the area.
James Hardie solution
James Hardie products were the natural choice, combining durability, aesthetic flexibility and proven performance.
In total, 240m² of 8mm Hardie® Panel and 8mm Hardie® Architectural Panel were installed across the building’s facade, using timber battens as the subframe. The design incorporated a striking two-tone combination of Boothbay Blue and Light Mist, creating a dynamic contrast that gives the clubhouse a refreshed and contemporary feel.
Having the option of face fix and secret fix gave the project team the flexibility to choose the most practical option for the project. The decision to go with Hardie® Panel in Smooth and Hardie® Architectural Panel in Brushed Concrete, face fixed, delivered an outstanding visual result. The interplay between the contrasting two finishes enhances the building’s texture and depth.
As someone who lives in the area and uses the club, this project meant a lot to me personally. We wanted to give the building a proper facelift, something modern that the community could be proud of again. The combination of the Hardie® Architectural Panel and Hardie® Panel in different colours worked perfectly and really brought the design to life.
